| A CONVERSATION WITH MICHELLE HAINER, author Quiz Zone and Quiz Zone #2. Read on for a chance to take a quiz!!!
1. How did you first become involved in the QUIZ ZONE project?
Downtown Bookworks came to me with the idea of doing a quiz book and asked me if I’d be interested. The reason they called me was because I had written and edited many of the quizzes at Teen People and one of my former editors there recommended me.
2. What do you hope girls will gain from participating in these questionnaires?
First and foremost, I hope they have fun taking them. Quizzes can be really entertaining and hopefully mine will live up to that! But I also want them to learn something about themselves and their friends.
3. Do you think girls today are too focused on material possessions, physical beauty, and popularity?
I think there’s a lot of pressure on girls today to look and act a certain way. And that forces them to grow up much faster. I’m always a little bit surprised at how worldly girls are when I interview them. I wasn’t nearly as sophisticated when I was their age. I can remember being 11 or 12 and struggling with whether or not it was okay to still play with my dolls. I ultimately packed them away, but I felt kind of sad about doing so.
4. Who were some of your female role models as a child?
My grandmother, my mother, and my aunt. They were all very strong women and they taught me that with hard work, I could accomplish anything I set my mind to.
5. And now for the juicy finale, we’re dying to know: what’s your secret talent?
Hmmm…probably that I’m a pretty good knitter. I took up knitting about a year and a half ago and I am addicted! Last year I made all of my friends and family hats and scarves for Christmas. I’ve made kids’ ponchos and I just recently made a dog sweater for my cousin’s cockapoo, Molly. People are always kind of surprised when I show them things I’ve made. |
